Sourcing voltage regulators in these supply chain constrained timesSponsored
Voltage regulators are not pieces of equipment that most networks have a lot of, nor are they replaced very often. When a network needs a new regulator or is replacing an old or non-performing regulator, sourcing can be a bit of a head scratcher – especially in these Covid times, with some manufacturers advising lead-times of 12 months or more.
US-based Howard Industries SVR-1 single-phase step voltage regulators are tap changing autotransformers designed to automatically regulate distribution line voltages in a range of plus or minus 10 per cent in 32 steps. One of the most popular and reliable voltage regulators in the US, they have been getting quite a lot of attention recently in New Zealand and Australia. Quality and reliability are the attributes most talked about – expressed as lower failure rates and consequently lower maintenance and operating costs. For example, the options of a painted stainless tank increases the life of the unit significantly over the mild steel unit, especially in coastal locations.
Internal potential winding taps and/or an external correction transformer are provided on all ratings so that each regulator may be applied within the range of system voltages.
The regulator’s complete internal assembly (including tap-changer switch, motor, core-and-coil assembly, and reactor coil-and-coil assembly) is mounted to the cover. This construction simplifies removal of the internal assembly for inspection, maintenance, and repair.
A digital control system automatically operates the tap changer mechanism to maintain system voltage within desired limits. The control system is externally programmable to allow precise setting of control limits and provides sophisticated capabilities for special control requirements, communication, and data-logging.
A unique feature of the Howard Regulator is the ability to detect and monitor reverse power. SVR-1 voltage regulators are designed for reliable operation and ease of maintenance and are supplied with a full array of standard features for routine applications.
If your network needs a new or replacement voltage regulator, the Howard SVR-1 could just be an option worth considering.
