Understanding what’s important to clients and their industry specific needs is of the upmost priority to General Metal Recyclers. In response GMR has employed Carl Whittington as the organisation's new Key Client Liaison Manager to project-manage the safe removal of redundant power assets for the sector.

Whittington says: "I have spent most of my working career (30 years) working on and around servicing and maintaining high voltage equipment.

“Having a passion for undertaking projects that are deemed in the 'too hard basket' and turning them into a successful outcome for the client is what gives me job satisfaction.

“After completing my apprenticeship as a mechanical fitter and turner I gained employment at the Haywards substation working on and maintaining the national grid.

“Over my 16 years employed by Transpower’s main service provider I worked my way up from field staff to supervisor and on to project management.

“Some of my milestone projects were installing and maintaining Wellington's first wind turbine in Brooklyn, overhauling/rebuilding large transformers for Transpower, reinstating and maintaining the total energy centre at Wellington hospital, and creating a workshop specialising in rebuilding transformers and circuit breakers for the distribution market and large industry.

“After leaving I formed my own company catering for the requirements of the local power board, working on their equipment and substations throughout the greater Wellington region.

“My most recent project was the removal of the overhead Trolley Bus Network for Wellington Cable Car. That then led to the removal of redundant equipment directly from Wellington Electricity substations. This included a detailed scope of works and processes and the involvement of key subcontractors that provided the customer the level of confidence required.

“This is a great launching pad for General Metal Recyclers' project team and will showcase the service that we are now able to provide

“I have known Julian O'Connell, managing director of GMR, for over 20 years and he's a top bloke. I have also worked as a contractor for GMR on various contracts Including the dismantling of three of New Zealand’s largest transformers on site at Tiwai aluminium smelter.

“When approached by Julian to come on board full time, I viewed the newly created role at GMR as the next step in my career.

“I have always been impressed with GMR's professional attitude towards safety and customer satisfaction, it seemed to me like a natural progression and I look forward to providing a service that will complement customers' projects and grow GMR's profile as an industry leader.

“If you are looking at the removal of redundant power-related assets, GMR is your one-stop-shop.

“We provide a service that can be as simple as pickups from depots around the country including bulk removal of cables, transformers and switchgear to assisting in scoping and pricing the equipment to be removed from the substations.

“We are here to help and assist you with your projects by making the removal of redundant material simple and easy for our clients, with safety, transparency and a professional attitude throughout the process being our points of difference.

“Please drop me an email or contact me directly to discuss any projects that you may have coming up."
